I am a Scottish mosaic artist working mainly with slate, rock and stained glass. Most of the slate I use is foraged from the Scottish countryside and seashores. Foraging trips take me to beautiful, often hidden, places and much of my inspiration comes from natural forms and the Scottish landscape, which is reflected in the geometric flow and colours in my work. I also use this ancient rock to represent some of Scotland’s prehistoric monuments, particularly those of Kilmartin Glen, Argyll. Much of the slate I use is local to the area.
Whilst the Scottish slate industry thrived for hundreds of years the last quarries were shut down more than 50 years ago. Despite this slate is still synonymous with Scottish architecture and provides an important link back to our cultural heritage. Much of the slate I love to use is essentially industrial spoil, remnants of the once prolific quarries which have now become part of our landscape.
The geographical differences in slate result in uniquely distinctive qualities, from rusty tones to studs of pyrite and sometimes shiny mica. Creating pieces of art from these materials is a privilege and a pleasure. A truly Scottish story.
I am always happy to discuss commissions. Please get in touch via email or use the contact form at the bottom of the page.
Recent projects have led me to experiment with using semi precious gemstones alongside slate. Such fun to work with! The bright colours and organic forms sit well with the differing varieties of slate bringing balance and harmony to the piece.
